Abstract Despite the high precipitation in the eastern region of Thailand, its topographic drawback make its water resources scarce. Four sugar factories in the region require good supply of sugarcane which is the cause of ever increasing sugarcane planting in the areas. For sustainability and effectiveness of water resource management in relation to sugarcane production, its water footprints (WFs) were investigated. By using the data of cane growing during 2013-2014, we found the average total WF of 178.3 m3/ton of cane and green, blue, and grey WF of 129.6, 17.6, and 31.1 m3/ton, respectively. The very low blue to green WF ratio indicates it is beneficial of sugarcane planting in the East. Since other water use sectors are more important than sugarcane, cane planting areas cannot be extended. By comparing to northern region and the global planting, total and blue WF of the East are the least but its grey WF is the largest. We found correlations of WFs and climatic variables including rainfall, maximum and minimum temperature. The very low mean ratio of WFblue to WFgreen (0.14) highlights reasonable depth and frequency of rainfall of the region. The lowest of WFblue to WFgreen ratio is of Chanthaburi where it has the highest rainfall of 2969.8 mm. Good correlation of WFs with climatic variables are WFgreen with rainfall (0.708), WFblue with maximum temperature (0.707), and WFgrey with maximum temperature (-0.637).
