Abstract Actinomycetes are the most important source of bioactive substances, especially antibiotics that are effective against pathogenic fungi and human pathogen. The objective of this study to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of actinomycetes isolated from soil samples. A total of 211 isolates were selected for antimicrobial properties. Isolate RS2 showed the highest percentage growth inhibition rate (% IR) against all the tested fungi such as Fusarium equiseti F25 (70.51%), F. oxysporum (65.56%), S. rolfsii (52.80%), Corynespora sp. (88.65%), Cylindrocladium sp. (49.59%), R. solani (28.38%), Colletotrichum capsici CC17 (64.96%), C. capsici CC151 (62.82%), C. gloeosporioides CG42 (90.14%) and C. gloeosporioides CG222 (68.98%). It also exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633 (51.96%), B. cereus (52.21%), Staphylococcus saprophyticus ATCC15305 (38.67%), S. aureus ATCC25923 (51.98%), Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) DMST20654 (34.14%), Vibrio cholerae non 01 DMST2873 (57.42%), and Acinetobacter sp. (57.63%). Based on morphological characteristics, 16S rDNA sequence and phylogenetic tree characterization, the isolate RS2 was identified as Genus Streptomyces. This isolate showed antimicrobial activity against various phyto-pathogenic fungi and human pathogens and it will be interesting to check type of antimicrobial agents in the future.
