Abstract
The paper and pulp industry has a large quantity of wastewater and sludge from wastewater treatment plant. The sludge has been used as valuable resource for soil amendment. However, the long term impact on soil biota is needed to be investigated. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of sludge from paper and pulp industry wastewater treatment on soil microbial activity and earthworm. The soil respiration, pH and EC were monitored by using the different concentration of paper mill sludge 0, 3.125, 6.25, 9.375, 12.50, 15.625 and 18.75 T ha−1 under Yasothon soil series. The results showed that soil microbial activity and EC were increased with increasing sludge content but pH was decreased in the sludge treatment when compared with control. Sludge was used in various concentrations 0.5, 1, 5 and 10% for the test of avoidance behavior of earthworm. The paper mill sludge has affected on earthworm avoidance activity. The earthworm avoided at 5% sludge concentration. Therefore, long term use of sludge from paper and pulp industry wastewater treatment for land application should be further studied.
Key words : paper and pulp industry, soil microbial activity, avoidance behavior, land application, sludge
