Abstract Tourism has become an integral part of national economic development in Thailand. Thai tourism industry has been geared to emphasize culture-specific varieties of travel, including ethnic cultures. This paper seeks to understand how a Mon diasporic community became a major destination for ethnic tourism. The study applied qualitative research methodology. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, observation and participation. Mon diaspora has been living in Baan Wang Ka, Kanchanaburi province since 1948. The ethnic suppression policies in Myanmar are the major cause of transnational mobility, although, later some people migrated to Thailand for trading opportunities. As diasporas, Mon people have struggled to maintain their livelihoods and conserve their cultures. Under tourism promotion policies, in 2008 Baan Wang Ka was promoted as an ethnic tourist site. Authentic Mon cultures, identities and ways of life were highlighted and commoditised. Mon in the community have engaged this opportunity and involved various tourist related activities that allow visitors to experience and learn their daily socio-cultural lives. Such engagements allowed this diasporic community to strengthen its culture and identity and became a strong Mon culture village drawing many tourists as well as Mon from Myanmar to learn about their cultures. Tourism has both positive and negative impacts on the host community. This paper reflects that ‘successful’ tourism involves not solely economic advantages, but it also allows local people to maintain their cultural and ethnic identities. Thus, tourism becomes a ‘space’ for ethnic culture preservation.
