Abstract Modeling one diode solar photovoltaic (PV) module is the most influencing thing in the commercial market of solar photovoltaic. However, to generate the best model is overwhelmingly influenced by the accurate estimation of the parameters involved. Not all the parameters needed in the simulation procedure are supplied by the manufacturers. To estimate these parameters with great accuracy is a very important step prior to simulation process in MATLAB. There are five parameters needed for simulation in MATLAB: photon current (Iph), diode ideality factor (a), reverse saturation current (Io), series resistance (Rs) and shunt resistance (Rsh). Among these parameters, series and shunt resistances are the most important ones and an algorithm capable of capturing these parameters is set up by Newton-Raphson (NR) iterative method in MATLAB. A 5 W monocrystalline module is used as a reference module in this work. It was found out that NR method is a fast and reliable computing method in estimating two parasitic resistances of solar photovoltaic. Finally, five parameters estimation with NR and modified ideality factor method is highly recommended for the accuracy of estimation of electricity generation from the one diode solar PV module.
