Black discoloration of dentinal caries is one of the shortcomings of SDF application in children that could affect the parental cooperation and satisfaction on treatment outcomes. This study aimed to compare parent-child satisfaction related to the outcome of three methods of topical fluoride application.
Children aged 6 -7 years who had at least one active caries lesion in dentine in primary canine or molars were randomly allocated into 3 groups: Group 1) 38% SDF applied to dentinal caries, Group 2) 5% NaF varnish applied on all surfaces, and Group 3) combination of 38% SDF followed by 5% NaF varnish. Children were interviewed for their satisfaction level immediately after the application. Parental satisfaction was measured using a self-administered questionnaire 2 weeks after the application.
A total of 300 children with 1,456 active dentine surfaces were recruited. More than 96% of all children were satisfied with the time spent, comfort level, taste and smell, and tooth color. There were no statistical significant differences among 3 groups (χ2, p=0.77). At 2 weeks after application, parental satisfaction also showed no significant group differences (p=0.23). Only 2 parents in SDF group reported ‘extremely unsatisfied’ due to darken teeth of the child.
In conclusion, procedures for fluoride treatment and discoloration of the teeth after SDF and fluoride varnish application did not affect parent-child satisfaction. |
