Abstract |
The objective of this present study was to evaluate the effects of Bamboo grass (Tiliacora triandra, Diels) pellet supplementation on rumen ecology and rumen fermentation in swamp buffaloes. Four, male swamp buffaloes at 350 ± 15 kg of body weight (BW) were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 Factorial arrangement in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. The treatments were follows: (T1) roughages to concentrate ratio (R:C) at 70:30; (T2) R:C at 70:30 with Bamboo grass pellet (BC) at 150 g/d; (T3) R:C at 30:70; (T4) R:C at 30:70 with BC at 150 g/d. All the experimental animals were fed at 2.5% BW. Under this investigation, the results revealed that ruminal pH at 4 h was significantly affected by R:C (P<0.01), BC (P<0.05) and there was an interaction (P<0.05), and was lowest in T3. Bacterial population at 4 h was significantly affected by R:C (P<0.01), and was the highest in T4, while protozoal population at 4 h and methane production were significantly reduced (P<0.05). Propionate at 4 h was increased by R:C (P<0.001) and BC (P<0.05) which were the highest by T4. Based on this study, it could be concluded that feeding BC with various levels of R:C ratio resulted in improved ruminal pH, increased rumen fermentation and reduced methane production. |
