Abstract Background: Stunting is a chronic malnutrition which can obviously impact child growth and development. Kayah State is an ethnic area with the socioeconomic hardship of which the nutritional status of the children should me closely monitors. Therefore, this study aims to explore the prevalence of stunting and its associated factors associated among middle school children in Kayah State, Myanmar. Objective: To explore stunting prevalence and the associated factors among middle school children, Kayah State, Myanmar. Methodology: : This cross-sectional study used the multi-stage random sampling method to select 434 middle school students from 9 schools in Kayah State. The data was collected by using a structured questionnaire and interview of the mothers and anthropometric measurement of the children. The associations were determined by using STATA (Version 13) as simple and multiple logistic regressions. Result: Majority of the samples were boy (51.38%) with the mean aged of 13.5 ± 1.42 years old. The prevalence of stunting (- 2 SD) was 31.11%; 95% CI: 26.73 - 35.48). After controlling the covariates, the factors that were significantly associated with stunting were female gender. After controlling all confounding factors by multivariable analysis, out of (434) children, the significantly associated factors are: female (Adj OR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.49 to 3.95, p < 0.001). financial problem (Adj OR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.49 to 3.95, p < 0.026), housing (Adj OR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.01 to 2.94, p = 0.026), child’s body weight (Adj (OR = 6.25, 95% CI = 3.78 to 10.35, p < 0.001), maternal body weight (OR = 2.36, 95% CI = 1.12 to 4.97, p= 0.024), maternal height (OR = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.52 to4.92, p= 0.028), water source (OR = 2.73, 95% CI = 1.52 to 4.92, p= 0.001), purified drinking water accessibility, (OR = 2.52, 95% CI = 1.30 to 4.90, p= 0.006), health facility(OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.09 to 3.34, p= 0.024) and maternal knowledge on health and nutrition (OR = 1.72, 95% CI = 1.07 to 2.78, p= 0.025). Conclusion: In this study, nearly one-third of middle school children were stunted. Socioeconomic factors, maternal factors, child factors and environmental factors were strongly associated with stunting of these children.
