     Abstract Hard turning experiment using Al2O3 + TiC mixed ceramic inserts for machining AISI 4140 chromium molybdenum steel for automotive industry applications was investigated. Turning experiments were carried out with varying feed rate ranging from 0.06 to 0.1 mm/rev under dry condition. One-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed that averages surface roughness and flank wear were significantly affected by the factor feed rate at the level of significance of 0.05. The feed rate of 0.08 mm/rev was an appropriate operating condition for turning AISI 4140 steel with the Al2O3 + TiC insert, based on the results of the Bonferoni 95% simultaneous confidence intervals for pairwise comparisons in treatment means.
