Abstract This research study was conducted to examine the influence of L1 sentence processing cues on L2 sentence processing under the Competition Model framework. In Thai language, word order cue is considered a strong cue used for interpreting meaning of sentences. However, previous studies have suggested that animacy is the primary cue used when processing L2sentences. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test the L1 processing strength cue, word order, against the claimed universal cue, animacy. Forty Thai EFL learners were asked to complete a grammatical judgment test using psych verbs. Their performance was measured on accuracy of judgment. Results lend to support the Competition Model assumption and revealed that L1 processing influenced L2 processing indicating that word order cue was stronger than animacy cue. Keywords: Psych Verb, SE verb, OE verb, Competition, Word Order cue, Animacy cue
