Abstract |
Currently, solar PV is an important renewable energy because of its environmental advantages and for its simpler power distribution systems. Optimal sizing and placement of grid-connected solar photovoltaics (PV) are important for power loss reduction in distribution systems because it also leads to cost reduction. To promote solar PV energy, a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) policy is used in many countries. However, the FiT is higher than for normal power generation and a distribution company (DisCo) absorbs the cost differential leading to increased electricity prices. Therefore, DisCo investment to reduce power losses was analyzed in the current study by considering the sizing and placement of grid-connected solar PVs on IEEE 33 and IEEE 69 bus distribution systems. The profit-cost ratio (PCR) was estimated with parameters accounting for the extra revenue obtained from reduced electricity losses and the DisCo’s investment to absorb the FiT costs. The results show the DisCo’s costs depend on solar PV sizing and reduced costs from the installation of solar PVs in a power distribution systems. Although the maximal power loss reduction requires an optimal location, the greatest reduction of the DisCo’s absorbed FiT cost was achieved at an optimal PCR location. Thus, optimal placement is important in solar PV allocation within distribution systems to attain a maximal PCR. |
