Abstract
Illuminance recommendations in Thailand, have been adopted from western standard documents. Using adopted illuminance standards for Thai people is questioned. The main objectives of this paper are to compare visual performance under different lighting quantities of Thai people and western people and to suggest appropriate illuminance levels to perform various visual tasks for Thai people. The final part of the study compares the study results to existing lighting recommendation and legislation standards in Thailand. Firstly, visual performance of 36 subjects of various ages were tested in the lighting laboratory with the same method used in original research by Weston. Visual task used in this experiment was finding the directions of Landolt rings on different charts under six illuminance levels (5, 22, 86, 345, 1,380, and 5,510 lx). Landolt ring sizes of 4.5, 3.0, and 1.5 min. of arc and contrast of 0.97, 0.56, 0.39, and 0.28 were included. In the second part, the obtained illuminance levels were then tested for satisfaction under real situations. The results showed that average visual performance scores of Thai subjects were lower than those of Weston. However the recommended illuminance levels obtained from the study are similar to ones of Weston in every task group. When comparing the recommended illuminance levels to Thai legislations, illuminance criteria in legislations in Thailand were relatively lower. When considering the satisfaction test, the illuminance levels of IESNA were relatively low compared to the test results.
