Abstract |
Traditional Thai Massage (TTM) is an alternative treatment that helps to release stress and affects the energy flows by pressing and stimulating correct pressure points. Previous studies revealed the beneficial effect of massage on immune system including Natural Killer Thymus (NKT) cells. To investigate the effects of TTM on NKT cells in the elderly, a randomized crossover-controlled trial was conducted among participants aged 60 to 80 years. The intervention of TTM and resting were randomly assigned a time/week for five weeks and crossed over with one month wash out. The number of NKG2D+NKT cells and intracellular interleukin (IL)-17 productions of NKG2D+NKT cells were analyzed based on flow cytometry at baseline (pre-intervention), short term (immediately post intervention) and long term (after 24 hrs at the last time of the intervention) effects in each phase of the intervention. The preliminary result from 8 subjects showed that the percentages of NKG2D+NKT cells and IL-17 production of NKT with NKG2D+ were not significantly different between TTM compared to resting at all times. However, increasing the number of sample size may give a greater power to detect the differences. |
