Abstract Urban expansion and development have had a significant impact on urban land grabbing, dispossessing urban habitants of arable and residential land rights. The lack of access to arable land and land tenure security has thus become a critical problem several cities are facing. The rise of the urban habitants as awakened citizens demanding and fighting for their land rights and secure land tenure has become a widespread phenomenon. Civic engagement as a concept seeks to explain the causes and changes in civic engagement that has an impact on mass civic movements. This introductory survey aims to explore the concept of civic engagement in order to reveal its significant principles, arguments, and challenges. This concept will be applied to a study of civic movements regarding the struggle for resource rights.
