Abstract |
The effects of particle sizes on some physical properties after chopping and on mechanical properties of sugarcane
leaves after pelleting were investigated. Leaves from sugarcane cultivar Khon Kaen 3 were chopped and crushed using a
hammer-mill machine with a 3 mm hammer-mill screen size. The crushed leaves were then sorted with sieve sizes of 2.1 and
2.5 mm to obtain three particle sizes: SLP-1 (<2.1 mm), SLP-2 (2.1-2.5 mm) and SLP-3 (>2.5 mm). The three different sizes of
sugarcane leaf particles were studied for their physical and mechanical properties. The tested sugarcane leaves had a moisture
content of 12.54% w.b. The physical property test results revealed that the average fineness modulus, the average particle size
and the average angle of repose all increased: 3.63-4.84, 1.15-2.65 mm, and 54.64°-60.21° respectively for the increase in
particle size. The average particle density of the sugarcane leaves decreased as the particle size increased, which was in the
range of 67.36-110.46 kg/m3. The average static coefficient of friction of wood, steel, plastic, and zinc surfaces was in the range
of 0.59-0.73. At the speed of pelletizing of 120 r/min, it was found that the pellet bulk density, pellet true density and
compressive strength for particle sizes of SLP-1 (<2.1 mm), SLP-2 (2.1-2.5 mm) and SLP-3 (>2.5 mm) were not statistically
different. The pellet bulk density was 307.49-330.93 kg/m3 (average 322.94 kg/m3), pellet true density was 847.10-
848.96 kg/m3 (average 848.09 g/m3) and compressive strength was 4.31-5.15 MPa (average 4.74 MPa). When the particle size
of SLP-1 (<2.1 mm) was pelletized at a speed of 140 r/min, the pellet bulk density, pellet true density and compressive strength
increased to the maximum values of 365.00, 928.69 kg/m3 and 6.43 MPa respectively. The different sizes of particles were
then pelletized at a speed in the range of 120-140 r/min and the average heat of combustion was 15.88-16.45 MJ/kg. The waste
sugarcane leaves after harvesting could be used for future energy production. |
