Abstract The bio-decolorization efficiency of bacteria in whole cells was studied for application in silk wastewater contaminated with commercial azo dyes, which are common raw materials for the textile industry. The physicochemical parameters affecting decolorization efficiency were investigated in silk dyes reduction for the selection of an effective strain. Streptomyces coelicoflavus CS-29 was the best strain for dyes reduction, possibly with adsorption mechanism. S. coelicoflavus CS-29 exhibited a high percentage of dyes reduction at 35°C for azo blue dye and 30°C for azo red dye; moreover, it was able to reduce dyes content at 40~45°C. The dye reduction of S. coelicoflavus CS-29 was optimized at pH 6~8 when decreasing both acidic azo blue and red dyes. Decolorization efficiency was above 90% for blue dye and more than 70% for red dye with an initial concentration of 300 mg/L of dyes. With high percentage decolorization, the mycelial cells aggregated with dyes resulting in increasing rapidly in decolorization within 3 days. Morphological observation showed that the mycelial cell of S. coelicoflavus CS-29 aggregated with dye molecules forming a dense cell pellet. This bacterium is a potential strain for application in textile dye reduction.
