     Abstract Carbon-based materials are abundant and low-cost. They can be used as electrodes in the fabrication of energy storage devices such as aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). In this work, we demonstrated the vital role of carbon material morphology in the electrochemical performance of AIBs. The electrochemical results showed that the flake-shaped KS6 provided a higher discharge capacity of around 112 mAh/g at a current density of 25 mA/g with clear discharge voltage plateaus. Alternatively, the potato-shaped graphite of MCMB delivered a discharge capacity of around 39 mAh/g at the same current density. Furthermore, the KS6 cell also exhibited a higher capacity than the MCMB cell at all current densities. This was attributed to the benefits of the flake morphology for easily inserting large amounts of AlCl4- anions with increasingly homogeneous flake thickness, which might also contribute to better electrochemical performance. The result can be used as a guideline for finding suitable carbon-based cathode materials for low cost and high performance AIBs.
