Abstract |
ABSTRACT
Background: Cancer is a chronic deadly disease and is 1 in 3 cause of death worldwide. Many patients seek alternative treatments such as cannabis to cure cancer. This study was aimed to identify intention to use medical cannabis among cancer patient and its associate factors in the Northeast of Thailand.
Method: The cross-sectional analytical study using a multistage randomly sampling method to recruit 1,193 cancer patients from 4 regional hospitals of the region to response to a structured questionnaire. The Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) was performed to identify the association using bivariate and multivariable analysis.
Result: As high as 67.39 % (95%CI: 64.73 - 70.06) of the cancer patients intended to use medical cannabis. The generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analysis indicated that factors associated with intention to use medical cannabis were high level of product marketing (Adj. OR = 3.83; 95%CI: 2.62 to 5.61) and high sell promotion (Adj. OR = 2.10; 95%CI: 1.47 to 2.97), adequate - excellent health literacy on access to information (Adj. OR = 2.72; 95%CI: 1.97 to 3.76), adequate - excellent health literacy on understanding information (Adj. OR = 2.37; 95%CI: 1.67 to 3.38), adequate - excellent health literacy on making decision (Adj. OR= 2.03; 95%CI: 1.46 to 2.82), fair-good attitude (Adj. OR = 2.72; 95%CI: 1.72 to 3.10), and average-high levels of knowledge (Adj. OR = 2.14; 95%CI: 1.55 to 2.96).
Conclusion: More than two-third of the cancer patients intended to use medical cannabis. Product marketing, health literacy, attitude, and knowledge were associated with intention to use medical cannabis
