Abstract Waste management is one of crucial greenhouse gas sources. Landfills typically used in Thailand have been identified as major sources of greenhouse gases. In this work, a case study of changing to waste incineration of Khon Kaen municipality as alternative methods of landfills is discussed. Wastes across the Khon Kaen municipality were sampled to analyze their components throughout a year. It shows that the three first components that contribute to the most of total waste are 1. food waste (48.16%), 2. plastic (26.55%) and 3. paper (7.10%) and there are typically 166.36 t/day of waste created in Khon Kaen municipality. That is equivalent to greenhouse gas emission of 76.32 tCO2eq/day and 128.41 tCO2eq/day for landfill and incineration, respectively. It also shows that the greenhouse generation is significantly decreased to 5.69 tCO2eq/day if only general wastes are burned while organic wastes are composted and recycle wastes are sold to recycling businesses. As the landfill and the waste-to-electricity plant are in the same location, there is no difference of greenhouse gas generation due to transportation between the disposal center and the landfill/waste-to-electricity plant. In addition, according to a history of the waste-to-electricity plant, it typically generates electricity of 0.378 MWh/t from the wastes, which is equivalent to 62.88 MWh/day, which is equivalent to a reduction in greenhouse gas emission of approximately 33.88 tCO2eq/day from electricity generation using fossil fuels. To reduce the greenhouse gas emission of incineration, it is recommended that plastics should not be burned but they should be separated for recycling.
