Abstract Nam Un dam has been beneficial to its downstream areas for more than half a century already. Its spillway was originally designed to drain 350 m3 /s to be safe but that was in 1965. Recently the dam has been threatened to be over topped by several heavy floods. We hypothesized that change of land cover in the dam watershed might be the main cause of the larger floods. Therefore the aim of our study was to investigate the land cover change of the dam watershed and how the change affected the peak flow to Nam Un reservoir. We used the satellite images of Landsat together with Land use maps of the Department of Land Development in the years 1987 and 2017 to measure change in the land cover which was classified into 5 classes i.e. forest, upland crop, paddy, settlement, and water body. We studied the effect of the different combinations of these land covers on peak flow using the extreme rainfall intensity-duration frequency curve for Sakon Nakhon province together with the watershed unit hydrograph. We found that the peak flow was increase during the two periods but not by much.
