Abstract The electrochemical and discharge behavior of low-cost commercial aluminum alloy 8011 as an anode was investigated in mixed electrolyte solutions between sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for use in aluminum-air batteries. The results indicated that mixed electrolyte solutions improve passive film formation and reduce the self-corrosion of the aluminum alloy. In addition, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of chain-like carbon nano-onions (CLCNOs) as a positive air electrode is also improved. The maximum capacity density in the mixed electrolyte solutions was returned as high as 1,232 mAhg-1, which was higher than the sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide solution only for 1.1 and 20.9 times, respectively.
