Abstract :
The Golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck) is a freshwater snail in the
family of Ampullariidae. They had been introduced to Thailand in the 1980s and reported as
severe rice pests in 1988. The department of agriculture of Thailand recommended using
Niclosamide as a chemical molluscicide to control the snails. Nevertheless, a natural product
such as plant molluscicide should be a better option: It was safer, cheaper, and showed a
lower impact on the environment. Consequently, the molluscicidal plants should have at least
4 properties: high toxicity, specific performance to the target mollusk, convenience to
prepare, and leaving no residuals in the environment. The 15 crude water plant extracts and
the technique of static aquatic toxicology within 48 hours were performed in this experiment.
The extraction of Camellia oleifera was considered the highest efficiency of plant
molluscicide with LC50 at 6.21 ppm. The histological alterations of the integumentary (foot)
and respiratory (ctenidium) system of P. canaliculata that had been exposed to the water
extract of C. oleifera at 6.21ppm for 48 hours showing as follows. The overloaded of mucus
secretion until exceeded the turning point of cell recovery was the cause of functional failures
in every system, these were the cause of snail death. In addition, the efficiency of C. oleifera
and Niclosamide after exposure to the sunlight was reduced by 50% when 4 days and wholly
decomposed after 15 days had passed. |
