Abstract This article was aimed at studying the accumulation of human capital of Isan migrants who returned from overseas employment. The qualitative research method was used and was based on phenomenology, with the analytical unit at the individual and household levels. The data was collected from February until July 2020, by in-depth interviewing conducted with 30 return migrants and by semi-structured interviewing conducted with 25 households of the return migrants, in addition to group interviewing with 21 community leaders. The data were analyzed by the content analysis method. The results showed that most of the return migrants were males and married. More than 50% of the return migrants completed the secondary education, were farmers, traders, had their own business, and were free-lance workers. More than half had previous experience of migration, both legally and illegally, with the destinations principally in South Korea, Israel, and Taiwan. The length of the last stay abroad was 2 to 6 years, during which they worked in factories, farms, and in the service sector, earning USD625-2,656 monthly. It was found that the return migrants accumulated 3 types of human capital by self-learning, on-the-job learning, and learning from training. Overseas employment enabled the return migrants to accumulate this human capital to upgrade themselves and their quality of life at their domicile.
