     Abstract This research presents a chemical modification of materials for CO2 adsorption focusing on Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived from plastic waste. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles were transformed into MOFs by depolymerizing PET to obtain benzene dicarboxylic acid ligands (BDC), which were then used to synthesize UiO-66(Zr) MOFs. The successful synthesis of BDC from plastic waste was confirmed by FTIR and XRD analysis. The NMR analysis revealed slight peak variations between the synthesized BDC and the commercial BDC, suggesting the presence of minor impurities in the synthesized BDC. The effect of incorporating para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) during UiO-66 synthesis on the properties of MOF and CO2 adsorption performance were investigated. The BET surface area and total pore volume of UiO-66 were found to be 749.1 m2 g-1 and 0.471 cm3 g-1, respectively. We found that an addition of PABA did not significantly increase the pore volume. However, UiO-66-NH2 exhibited slightly higher CO2 adsorption compared to UiO-66. This might be due to the amino group that can chemically interact with CO2. Nonetheless, the adsorption was slightly lower than reported in previous studies, it could be due to the presence of detected impurities.
