Abstract In this experiment, we used the SMIS 0.3 T 330 mm gap Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at the Physics Department of Khon Kaen University to non-invasively monitor the development of chick embryos in eggs. A set of gradient coils and an RF coil suitable for imaging a small sample of about 40 mm have been designed and constructed. We found that during the first 1-5 days the embryo organs could not be distinguished and T2-weighted imaging was best. After 5 days the embryo formed organs such as brain, eyes and heart and T1-weighted imaging was best. From the experiment we found that differences in egg composition affected the NMR properties of the embryo, and that MR imaging did not have any adverse effect on chick embryo development
