Abstract |
Bun Bangfai/ Rocket Festival is a traditional culture of Tai peoples which is spread all over Thailand. Isan, Laos, and Tai migrants raise the festival as their important identity. To arrange this festival nowadays, it’s partly caused by the Yasothon province’s rocket festival arrangement where has been promoted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as national festival since 1977 – the time that it start to be modernized. It was noticed that nowadays Bun Bangfai is questioned from inside and outside to the dissolving of tradition such as a tradition without spirit whereas it is the proud of Isan people. What is the pattern of contemporary Bun Bangfai, how globalization affected it and how it serves the people’s way of life, are the main questions.
This paper presents a transformation of Bun Bangfai Rocket festival in Yasothon province of Thailand which is intentionally transformed to be a glocal festival. The integration of local and global idea makes local people maintain the old ritual and constructs new components – a process called detraditionalization. Socio-economical, cultural and Political aspects are investigated. The case of urban Bun Bangfai shows a transformative society from a production [of tradition] society to a semi-consumer society. An idea of Anthony Giddens’s post-traditional society is discussed.
