Abstract This study was aimed to explore semiotics activities through mathematical communication in mathematics classroom using Lesson Study and Open Approach a qualitative method was employed by using a protocol analysis and its results were presented by using analytic description. This study was conducted with small group of grade 6 at Chum Chon Ban Chonnabot School, Khon Kaen Province, in the second semester of 2013 school year. Learning unit of ratios in Study with Your Friends: Mathematics for Elementary School, 6th grade vol.2 textbook was used to collect data, according to the process of Lesson Study and Open Approach. The data, includes of 1) protocol of problem solving 2) field notes and 3) students’ written works, were analyzed by Inprasitha (2011)’s framework of Open Approach, Emori (2004)’s framework of mathematical communication and Radford ) 2004)’s framework of semiotics activity. Open Approach as a teaching approach was used to divide each phase of problem solving mathematics classroom, Emori (2004)’s framework was used to analyze the mathematical communication and Radford) 2004)’s framework was used to analyze the semiotics activities. The results revealed that there are semiotics activities during the students’ mathematical communication in mathematics classroom using Lesson Study and Open Approach. For example, the students wrote curve lines to explain the number that was change in meaning of ratios. As the results, the semiotics activities could be used for planning mathematics activity in mathematics classroom using Lesson Study and Open Approach that emphasized on mathematical problem solving.
