Abstract BACKGROUND: The physics concepts of sound wave are fundamental and important in context of physics learning at all level of education, from elementary school to higher education. Unfortunately, its abstraction and difficulty influence students to produce unscientific understanding and they learn physics with no motivation. METHODOLOGY: To the better know of current status of preservice physics teachers’ conceptual understanding of sound wave and their physics motivation, this study investigates 33 preservice physics teachers’ conceptual understanding and physics motivation using 12 two-tier conceptual questions and 25 Likert-scale questionnaire items, respectively. RESULTS: The result from the 3rd year student teachers from Teachers College at Dongkhamchang, LAO PDR, showed that most of the preservice physics teachers held alternative conceptions of sound about (i) reflection, (ii) refraction, (iii) interference, (iv) speed of sound in different medium and temperature. Moreover, they had no conception about sound diffraction. Based on the analysis of physics motivation, the highest score was relied on intrinsic motivation (IM), career motivation (CM), grade motivation (GM), self-determination (SDT), and self-efficacy (SEC), respectively. IMPLICATION: The main implications of this study is the rethinking of pedagogy used for teaching physics of sound wave in order to improving the preservice physics teachers’ conceptual understanding and fostering their physics motivation
