Abstarct
AIMS
To assess the diagnostic properties of serum YKL-40 for diagnosis of cervical squamous cell carcinomas (SCC)
METHODS
Blood samples were collected from 56 patients who attended the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic at Khon Kaen Hospital in Thailand. YKL-40 levels in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay in healthy women donors (n=40) and SCC patients (n=56).
RESULTS
Serum YKL-40 was used significantly high in SCC (median: 63.5 ng/ml; range: 23-309 ng/ml) when compared to healthy controls (median: 20.8 ng/ml; range: 3-97 ng/ml). Assessment of serum YKL-40 as a diagnostic marker for SCC using Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve revealed area under the curve (AUC) of 0.958 (95% confident interval (CI) = 0.916-0.999), the sensitivity of 94.6% and the specificity of 85% with cut-off value of 30.5 ng/ml. The results proved that there isn’t any significant association of low and high serum YKL-40 level with overall survival time in SCC patients who were observed. As a result, patients with high serum YKL-40 level tended to have poor prognosis compared to those with low serum YKL-40.
CONCLUSION
The study indicates that serum YKL-40 can be used as a diagnostic marker for SCC with high sensitivity and specificity.
