Abstract The market rubber-based farming replaced traditional swidden farming normally practiced in northern upland of Laos. The objectives of this research was to investigate the impact of changing swidden based farming (SBF) to rubber based farming (RBF) on food security and economic return in Luang Namtha district, Luang Namtha provinces, northern Laos. The results shows that some households (HH) shift from SBF to RBF alone but some HHs integrated SBF and RBF (ISRBF). HHs practiced RBF alone found the lowest food security level and vulnerability in food security. The ISRBF exhibited greater food security level than those of SBF and RBF alone. However, the RBF gave the highest households income.
