Abstract This paper presents the design and development of the guidance, navigation and control ( GNC) systems for autonomous takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approaching, landing and taxi through software- in- loop testing (SIL) , utilizing the commercially available MATLAB/Simulink and X-Plane flight simulator. A small-fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) model was made using Plane Maker/Airfoil Maker following the designed dimensions and parameters. A meta-heuristic (MH) is applied to identify a flight dynamic model and PID gain tuning of an inner loop controller while Uniform Datagram Protocol (UDP) via Ethernet was used for the communication between the XPlane flight simulator and Simulink. Consequently, the implementation of GNC systems on a fixed-wing UAVs presents the success of autonomous flight from takeoff to landing. The operation of the GNC systems and the capabilities of the autonomous flight are demonstrated in the experimental results.
